HYDRAFACIAL® FAQS

The HydraFacial® is a deep-cleansing and exfoliating facial treatment and has been hailed as a big advancement on the traditional microdermabrasion. Here are some of the most frequently asked HydraFacial questions from prospective patients. If you’d like any more information, please click here to contact us.

WHAT IS THE HYDRAFACIAL?

The Hydrafacial™ or Hydradermabrasion treatment as its technically known, is a relatively new procedure in aesthetic technology. It is evolved from its older cousin Microdermabrasion which is a non surgical process of removing the face’s outer layer of dead or damaged skin using a stream of microcrystals blasted onto the surface of the skin. However the primary difference between microdermabrasion is that with the Hydrafacial there is a lack of any crystals used to assist in the exfoliation process, and uses instead a specially shaped spiral tip which exfoliates and removes impurities along with applying various serums that cleanse, hydrate and provide antioxidant infusion during the treatment process. This is therefore less harsh than the microdermabrasion yet even more efficient. It takes its name from the root word Hydrate; ‘to cause to take up moisture’. This ability to moisturize the skin differentiates the HydraFacial from other forms of skin rejuvenating and microdermabrasion procedures. The treatment is soothing, refreshing, non-irritating and immediately effective.

IS IT CLINICALLY PROVEN TO WORK?

Yes. A number of clinical trials into the use of hydradermabrasion and the associated application of antioxidant serums, both as a stand-alone treatment and in conjunction with other non-surgical skin rejuvenation procedures, such as Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), have been carried out by Physicians. One study in America, used 20 volunteers being split into two groups, with one group having six hydradermabrasion treatments using the mechanically applied antioxidant serum, spaced 7 – 10 days apart, and the other group simply had the serum applied manually, again for six treatments spaced 7 – 10 days apart. Results were gathered two weeks after the final treatment and these showed that the group treated with hydradermabrasion demonstrated increased thickness in the skin layers, with the deposition of new collagen fibres and increased levels of antioxidants in the skin. Fine lines, pore size and hyperpigmentation were also decreased following treatment. The other group showed no change in skin structure, clinical attributes (such as wrinkling, hyperpigmentation etc.) or antioxidant levels. It was therefore concluded the Hydrafacial™ treatment effectively improved skin quality and increased the antioxidant levels present in the skin, whilst the lack of an abrasion element and a manual application of antioxidants did not result in detectable skin changes.

HOW WOULD HYDRAFACIAL BE GOOD FOR MY SKIN?

Hydration is the foundation of any healthy, radiant skin. Irritation and dehydration of the skin has been proven to increase signs of aging. The HydraFacial is a hydrating and non-irritating treatment.

IN SIMPLE TERMS, WHAT DOES THE HYDRAFACIAL ACHIEVE?

The HydraFacial treatment removes dead skin cells and extracts impurities within the skin, while simultaneously bathing the new skin with cleansing, hydrating and moisturizing serums. Hydrafacial effectively and safely improves skin quality by increasing its thickness, repairing the dermal matrix and delivering beneficial antioxidants. Clinical improvements include better facial tone and texture, less skin colour patchiness and fewer fine lines. The procedure is ideally suited for those desiring non invasive facial rejuvenation with minimal recovery.

WHAT DOES THE HYDRAFACIAL DEVICE COSIST OF?

The Hydrafacial is a multi-platformed device that allows a range of different skin application treatments depending on your needs. Its efficiency does however center around the special tip, which is the unique part of the device, and is known as the Hydropeelâ„¢ Tip. The treatment works differently from traditional microdermabrasion due to the spiral shape of the tip, which has multiple abrasive edges, meaning that the skin is exfoliated several times as the tip is moved over it in a planing motion, whilst the serums applied soften the skin and sebum (skin oils) making it much easier to extract away impurities.

WHAT SERUMS ARE USED WITH THE HYDRAFACIAL DEVICE?

The serums used within the Hydrafacial MD™ range, and which are delivered direct to the skin’s surface via the Hydropeel™ Tip, contain amongst other products, glucosamine, lactic acid, and active botanicals for cleansing and hydrating all skin types. Some serums also contain mild concentrations of salicyclic acid, used for cleansing and hydrating oily and acne prone skin. Our antiox-6™, antioxidant treatment serum for all skin types containing hyaluronic acid, vitamins A and E and white tea extract is designed to combat the damage created by free radicals within the environment, and deeply moisturise the skin. The Hydrafacial™ device can also be used to apply the TNS® (Tissue Nutrient Solution) Serum which contains NouriCel MD™, a proprietary mix of human growth factors, cytokines, soluble collagen, antioxidants and matrix proteins, discovered through more than a decade of wound-healing research. Growth factors and cytokines are proteins that the body produces for regular growth and repair of tissue. The proteins are believed to work in concert with each other to produce the desired effects of reducing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and sun damage. A home use kit is often recommended following the Hydrafacial™ TNS® Serum treatment to enhance and maintain the results.

ARE THERE OTHER TREATMENT OPTIONS AVAILABLE ON HYDRAFACIAL WHICH HELP?

The Hydrafacialâ„¢ system also offers a chemical peeling treatment in conjunction with the hydradermabrasion procedure. There are three Glysalâ„¢ peel strengths available, ranging from the Mild Glysalâ„¢ Prep which is suitable for most skin types as a pre-peel or preparation product, the Moderate Glysalâ„¢ Peel for oily, acne prone skin and to target fine lines and hyperpigmentation and the stronger Aggressive Glysalâ„¢ Peel. Finally red and blue LED light (Light Emitting Diode) handpieces can be applied to the Hydrafacialâ„¢ treated skin to aid skin rejuvenation and acne treatment respectively. The energy delivered by red LED light has been shown to enhance cellular metabolism, accelerate the repair and renewal of damaged skin cells, as well as stimulate the production of collagen leading to improved skin texture and firmness. Unlike more powerful laser and IPL treatments there is no pain associated with the delivery of the LED light to the skin. One particular interesting benefit of the Hydrafacial Device is with the use of The Del Solâ„¢ blue light LED handpiece for the control of acne. Blue light works by killing the acne-causing bacteria, P. acnes, and is being used to treat inflammatory acne vulgaris that has not responded to other acne therapies. The blue-light products of today however do not contain ultraviolet (UV) light, which was a staple of former light therapy used to treat acne. UV light can damage skin and is no longer used to treat acne. The combination of Hydrafacialâ„¢ as a pre-treatment to the blue LED light means that dead skin and debris is removed first so that the blue light is better targeted at the acne prone skin layers beneath.

WHAT RESULTS SHOULD I EXPECT AND HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?

The results will depend on the condition of your skin. Many people report seeing visible skin refinement and an even, radiant skin tone after just one treatment with the results and skin hydration lasting between 5 and 7 days, and sometimes longer, making it an ideal one off treatment for a special occasion or a ‘freshen-up’. Others with more marked skin texture changes, may however require a second or even third session to see a noticeable improvements. In general, for improving the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, acne and oily skin or areas of colour patchiness, we usually advise a series of six treatments, with ongoing maintenance treatments every 2 to 8 weeks. A treatment programme incorporating the various serums, growth factors, peel products and LED light will of course be customised on a per patient basis, depending on the individual skin requirements.

HOW LONG DOES HYDRAFACIAL TREATMENT TAKE?

The HydraFacial treatment is a fast, efficient treatment that takes between 30 – 90 minutes, depending on the additional options used during treatment. Most patients find that they can return to work and normal activities immediately after treatment since there is no downtime.

DOES HYDRAFACIAL HURT AND WHAT IS RECOVERY LIKE?

The treatment is usually painless and doesn’t irritate the skin greatly. The treatment is often described as a feeling like ‘a cool paintbrush moving over the face’. All patients will experience some slight tightness (we like some tightness!) and redness of the skin afterwards, which may last for a couple of hours following treatment. Treatments using peel products may however prolong any redness. You will of course be advised accordingly. On rare occasions, redness may continue for a day or so and sensitive skin around the eyes can sometimes become swollen. If this does occur, cold compresses will help to get rid of this side effect. The risk of any scarring is exceedingly rare with this procedure.

AM I SUITABLE FOR HYDRAFACIAL TREATMENT?

Even the most sensitive skin usually tolerates the HydraFacial treatment. The HydraFacial treatment is designed for all skin types including thinning, ageing, dry or oily skin as well as ethnic coloured skins; however those individuals who have been treated with isotretinoin for severe acne within the last 12 months, those with active skin infections, such as herpes simplex (cold sores), or with a history of problems associated with skin healing are not suitable candidates for treatment. Please let us know if you suffer with allergies to shellfish or nuts as some serums we use may contain these products. Following assessment, specific treatment serums will be used for the treatment of your unique skin condition and needs. The Hydrafacial treatment is very effective at improving the complexion of the skin. Of course for very deep lines, wrinkles and skin colour changes, other more invasive treatments may be required. This will be assessed at the time of your consultation.

IS A HYDRAFACIAL TREATMENT RECOMMENDED AFTER A FACELIFT?

Yes. Hydrafacial treatments are routinely recommended after Facelift surgery. This is because it is very useful in clearing any debris, dead skin cells that have arisen in the first few weeks after this type of surgery. In addition it also helps in infuse moisturising serums which give the skin a healthy glow. It is usually best to do this approximately 6 weeks after this type of surgery.

WHAT SORT OF PRACTITIONER CAN PERFORM HYDRAFACIALS?

As with microdermabrasion, there are some hydradermabrasion machines and treatments which can be found in beauty salons and spas and which can be used by trained beauticians. The Hydrafacial device used in our practice is medical grade and uses different tips and peels that can have a deeper effect on the skin and therefore are designed for nurses’ or doctors’ use only.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I COME IN FOR TREATMENT?

Your first discussion with our practitioner should clearly set out your expectations and what they think will happen to your skin as a result of hydradermabrasion. A medical history will be taken, to ensure that there are no reasons why you shouldn’t have the treatment, and you would normally be asked to sign a consent form at this time which means that you have understood the potential benefits and risks associated with hydradermabrasion. If you have a history of herpes simplex infections (cold sores), an anti-viral drug may be prescribed as a precaution for the course of the treatment. The tip of the Hydrafacial™ device is passed over the surface of the skin in smooth, stroking movements, whilst the proprietary serums and/or peel products are simultaneously directed onto it and then vacuumed away, along with loosened dead skin cells and other debris. All the waste is retained in a separate closed container to avoid any risk of contamination. A new treatment tip is always used per patient.

WHAT SHOULD I DO AFTER TREATMENT?

Use any post-treatment skincare products which should include a sunscreen to protect the skin from the sun. Please contact us if you notice any signs of infection or pigment changes. Additionally, when you leave the clinic after a hydrafacial treatment you may notice varying degrees of redness for a short period of time depending on the depth of the abrasion and use of peel products. You will be advised on the appropriate way to reduce this.

how long do results last?

The smooth results and hydration may last 5 to 7 days or even longer. A series of 6 treatments are usually recommended for improving the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, acne and oily skin on a weekly basis. After your first series of treatments, you may want to maintain your results with a HydraFacial treatment every month.

HIJAMA CUPPING THERAPY FAQS

Hijama Cupping Therapy is a method of treatment in which a cup is put on various points of the body and reflex zones usually on the back, abdomen or legs to cause local congestion through a negative pressure created by a special pump. This involves the removal of stagnant blood inc dead cells, bacteria and inflammation. If you’d like any more information, please click here to contact us.

WHAT IS HIJAMA CUPPING THERAPY?

Hijama or cupping is a safe, non invasive, non surgical, preventative, curative and therapeutic treatment that was established over 1400 years ago, which works at the cellular level. Hijama is an extension of acupuncture and general cupping, but it is a completely separate therapy from regular cupping. Hijama literally means sucking or drawing out in Arabic. It is the ultimate detoxification and cleansing treatment with a unique ability to draw out toxins, stagnant blood, inflammation, and excess uric acid from the body in a very safe manner.

The environment that we live in exposes our bodies to a toxin overload, through the air we breath, the food we consume, the water we drink, the pharmaceuticals that we take and the daily products we apply to our bodies. These air borne pollutants as well as preservatives, pesticides and chemicals enter our bodies and blood stream creating vast amounts of illnesses and diseases that we see in our fellow humans. Hijama allows the release of these toxins that have been accumulated and confined in our bodies, creating havoc to be released. And this helps boost our immune system, promotes and boosts the circulatory system and allows our body to heal, repair and fight back to cure itself.

Who should not do Cupping/Hijama?

If you are younger than 16 or older than 65, we do not recommend Cupping. Also, if you have recently (less than six months ago) had a miscarriage, your body will need time to rejuvenate itself. Consult your doctor about this before doing anything else.

Why am I not experiencing immediate results of the Cupping/Hijama?

A Cupping session will often give immediate pain relief in many parts of the body, especially for lower-back pain, but for other areas it may however take a bit longer. Cuping works in several different ways; both as a detoxification of the blood and as a preventive medicine. When working with preventing diseases, the effects of the Cupping will take longer as it attempts to influence and improve the condition as a whole. You may not notice the effects it had on you immediately – while your overall health and immune system is improving, it sometimes improves without you even noticing it.

I suffer from diabetes - can I still use Cupping/Hijama as a therapy?

Patients who are diabetic will also benefit from Cupping – as long as the therapy is performed with much caution. The blood sugar levels must be monitored closely. If not, it may be dangerous for the patient. We only practise Cupping on patients when we have evaluated it as safe and all preventions has been taken.

Can Cupping/Hijama cure cancer?

Although Cupping offers a wide range of health benefits; from unspecified lower back pain to the nerve pains of postherpetic neuralgia, no scientific studies shows any benefits of treating cancer patients with it. Theoretically, the treatment could cause an increase in the blood flow to a tumour and thereby increasing its growth. It is therefore not recommended as a treatment for cancer.

Will Cupping/Hijama benefit us who are suffering from rheumatism?

Cupping will contribute to a more balanced cellular immune system. It might therefore be very helpful for those suffering from rheumatism, relieving them of immediate pain and possibly in the long run promoting the health of the patients. When treating patients of rheumatism, we aim at not only an instant pain-relief but also less intense pain in the future.

I have never had Cupping/Hijama before; how painful is it?

Cupping is not very painful and absolutely no pain to be worried or nervous about before the session. The feeling may be somewhat similar to having your blood drawn for a blood test, only difference being that Cupping is less intrusive on the body as it does not penetrate your vein.

What is the difference between ‘Wet Cupping and ‘Dry Cupping’?

Wet Cupping is known as all forms of Hijama which draws blood from the body. Dry Cupping is the form which does not involve blood being removed; such as massage cupping and herbal cupping. At Cupping Birmingham we perform both Wet Cupping and Dry Cupping.

How long does each Cupping/Hijama session take?

For a brand new session, the treatment may take up to one hour due to the consultation prior to the Cupping treatment. For patients continuing with their Cupping treatments, a session may take up to 45 minutes. This can vary depending on circumstances.

How long will those suction marks last after the treatment?

The suction marks after the Cupping treatment will normally remain for between 3 to 7 days. This can vary depending on each individual.

Are there any side effects after Cupping/Hijama?

Since Cupping is recommended to be done on an empty stomach, common side effects might be slight dizziness, feeling light headed and possibly fainting. Although this is uncommon, it may happen and does not mean that anything is wrong with you. These side effects are similar to the ones you may feel after having a blood test on an empty stomach and are not dangerous.

Can Cupping/Hijama help with preventing colds and the flu?

As Cupping is widely known for its benefits for the immune system, it may very well have a preventive function for these viruses. However, it is not guaranteed to cure you of your cold or flu once you have the virus.

I suffer from acne, will Cupping/Hijama help clear my skin?

If you do Cupping and take cleansing herbs, it might have a very good effect on your skin condition. The blood stream will improve and straighten out the hormonal imbalances, giving you a clear and smooth skin.

I am diagnosed with depression; will Cupping/Hijama help me?

Depression depends on a lot of different factors, and we cannot say that Cupping alone will help you. Its benefits may increase if you combine Cupping with other forms of therapy and what your doctor have prescribed for you. The treatment is not a cure that works wonders – it often works best when combined with other treatments and a healthy lifestyle. But overall, improving the blood circulation generally helps lift moods.

How exactly is Cupping/Hijama done?

Cupping draws blood from the body, with the intention of clearing toxins and improving health. This is done by using specially made cups, that draw the blood to a specific area of the body. Small incisions are made that then allow the blood to flow into the cups, removing harmful blood and restoring health. We use modern, sterilised equipment that are disposable, including cups that feature a special suction valve for ease of use and precise control.

Do you have any advice to new patients prior to the treatment?

It is recommended to fast before the treatment. If you tend to feel weak or faint after fasting, it is however recommended to rather avoid eating for up to 2-3 hours before the treatment. Make sure that the food you eat before the Cupping session is nutritional, avoid eating red meat and dairy products. Also, remember to be proper hydrated before the session to avoid feeling faint or dizzy.

Do you have any advice for new patients after the treatment?

Rest after the treatment and give your body time to gain the full benefits of Cupping. Do not let the affected areas get exposed to cold weather, water or wind immediately afterwards. You should avoid red meat and dairy products as your body will use a lot of energy digesting these particular foods. Apply olive oil to the marks a couple of times per day to speed up healing.
